About Brae Island Regional Park

Brae Island Regional Park is situated within the District of Mission, British Columbia, along the north bank of the Fraser River. The park forms an integral part of the Fraser River's floodplain and is characterized by riverine forests, open grassy areas, and wetlands. Its landscape is relatively flat, featuring sandy shores and riparian habitats that support a range of wildlife including migratory birds, waterfowl, and small mammals. The park serves as an important stopover for birds along the Pacific Flyway, making it popular with birdwatchers. Historically, the area was used by Indigenous peoples for fishing and transportation along the river. Today, Brae Island is primarily used for recreation, with its most notable amenities being the Brae Island Regional Park Campground, which is accessible by car and boat launch facilities that provide access to the Fraser River. The park allows visitors to engage in camping, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and picnicking. Brae Island’s proximity to urban centers like Mission and the larger Metro Vancouver region makes it a convenient natural retreat for day visitors and multi-day campers alike. The park's relatively undeveloped state helps preserve its quiet atmosphere and supports ecological balance, offering visitors a chance to experience the diverse ecosystems of the Fraser River corridor. Visitors can hike trails through forested areas, enjoy river views, and spot local wildlife including bald eagles and great blue herons. Brae Island Regional Park is managed by Metro Vancouver Regional District and remains a valued green space offering outdoor recreation while protecting important riverine habitats.
